Metaphors -Human Resource

Trying to determine the perfect metaphor that would best describe an educational system’s view of the Human Resource framework was more than difficult for me. I suppose this shows my own perceived weakness in this framework! Of course, family is the first one to come to mind. However, it seems to be way over-used in our school systems today and I admit that I use it way too often myself. What exactly is meant when you refer to those you work with as family? Perhaps, its common use refers to the notion that some employees of schools tend to feel victimized by higher authorities and changes in paradigms. Perhaps, it refers to the bonds that are created as individuals come together for support through these trials and tribulations. Perhaps, it is more or less a ploy tactic used by the higher authorities to get people to buy into the idea that they are a “family” in hopes that this will cause them to be willing to worker harder and more effectively so that they will better reach the pinnacle. We wouldn’t want to let the members of our family down! Would we?

I prefer to think of the human resource frame as the body and soul of our organization. It is the people that keep us alive – being able to provide a continued public service. It is the people that shape the identity of a school’s culture – or soul.
